Finding Gratitude Through Life’s Unexpected Challenges: Teddy’s GIST Story
After a rare cancer diagnosis and three major surgeries, Teddy shares how family, perseverance, and financial assistance have helped her adjust to a new way of life.
For much of her life, Teddy Lou Bryan was accustomed to caring for others. As a registered nurse working in critical care and a mother of six children, she balanced a demanding career with raising her family and enjoying the activities that made her happiest. Whether she was reading, sewing, cooking, or caring for her home, Teddy embraced each day with energy and purpose.
Having always considered herself healthy, she never imagined that a rare cancer diagnosis would dramatically change her daily life.
Today, Teddy lives with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), a rare form of cancer that has required multiple surgeries, ongoing medication, and significant adjustments to her lifestyle. Although her journey has brought unexpected challenges, she continues to find strength in her family, appreciation for modern medicine, and gratitude for the moments that matter most, thanks to support from those like Accessia Health.
An Unexpected Diagnosis
Teddy’s health journey began around age 62, when she started experiencing severe abdominal pain. Despite visiting multiple physicians and undergoing numerous tests, answers did not come easily.
Following an extensive diagnostic process and major surgery, Teddy learned she had GIST, a rare cancer that develops in the digestive tract.
During her first surgery, doctors discovered tumors involving her reproductive organs, requiring a total hysterectomy. Although she began taking medication to treat the cancer, the tumors returned less than two years later.
A second surgery became necessary when tumors developed around her bowel, requiring a bowel resection. Within another two years, she faced a third operation after additional tumors were discovered in her omentum, a layer of tissue within the abdomen.
Three major surgeries over six years took a considerable toll on her health.
Following her third surgery, Teddy’s physician increased her medication dosage. Since then, she has experienced an encouraging period of stability.
“After this surgery, my doctor doubled my medication and so far, my CAT scans have been clear for the last year and a half.”
While these results have brought reassurance, Teddy continues to manage the lasting effects of her condition and treatment.
Adjusting to a New Normal
Before her diagnosis, Teddy was energetic, independent, and accustomed to an active lifestyle. Living with GIST has required her to rethink what daily life looks like.
The side effects of her medication, combined with the physical consequences of multiple abdominal surgeries, have created ongoing gastrointestinal complications. She now follows a low-FODMAP diet and must carefully monitor what she eats to reduce the risk of digestive symptoms.
She has also experienced weight loss, increased susceptibility to illness, and unpredictable periods of fatigue and discomfort.
“I never know from one day to the next, how I will feel.”
That uncertainty has made it difficult to plan activities or commit to family gatherings. For someone who has always valued time with loved ones, missing important occasions because of illness or exhaustion has been especially challenging.
Yet Teddy has gradually learned to approach her circumstances with patience and greater awareness of her physical limits. Now retired, she has more opportunities to rest, when necessary, manage her schedule, and prioritize her well-being.
“I have learned to say ‘No.’”
For Teddy, that simple lesson has become an important part of living with a chronic condition. Rather than pushing herself beyond her limits, she focuses on listening to her body and making room for recovery.
Life with GIST
Throughout her experience, Teddy has been surrounded by a dependable support system.
Her husband provides assistance and encouragement whenever she needs it, while her children remain understanding of the limitations her condition sometimes creates.
Their support has helped her through difficult days and reminded her that she does not have to face every challenge alone.
Teddy also credits her access to specialized medical care and advances in treatment with helping her manage a complicated diagnosis.
Although living with GIST has changed many aspects of her life, it has also reshaped her perspective on what matters most.
“I live each day grateful for the things that I can do and not worry for the things I can’t do.”
This outlook does not mean every day is easy. Teddy acknowledges that her limitations can still be frustrating, particularly when she is unable to participate in activities she once enjoyed without hesitation.
Instead of allowing those frustrations to define her experience, she tries to recognize the opportunities and moments of happiness that remain.
Easing the Financial Burden with Accessia Health
Managing a rare cancer often involves more than the physical and emotional demands of treatment. For Teddy, frequent medical appointments and hospitalizations have also required considerable travel.
Although she has been fortunate to receive care from physicians across multiple specialties, transportation expenses have become another practical consideration throughout her journey.
When Teddy first learned that Accessia Health would provide financial assistance and cover medical-related travel expenses, it was an unexpected welcome surprise.
“I have had to travel a lot for my doctor visits in hospitalizations, so having my gas paid for has been very helpful.”
