Finding Stability in the Midst of Complexity: Natalia’s Story

Natalia is a wife and mother whose life has been shaped by chronic illness. What began as severe pain and ongoing health complications in childhood followed her into adulthood, eventually leading to a diagnosis of Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID), a condition that weakens the immune system.

After building a career in the culinary industry, the physical demands became too much for her body to sustain. When multiple attempts to secure Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) were denied, Natalia felt overwhelmed and uncertain about what to do next — until she discovered Accessia Health’s A.C.C.E.S.S program.

Living with a Complex Diagnosis

Since childhood, Natalia has dealt with severe pain, chronic gastrointestinal dysfunction, and unexplained health complications. After moving to the Bay Area, Natalia pursued her passion for cooking. But the long hours and physical demands eventually took a toll. Despite pushing herself to her limits, her body could no longer keep up.

“My journey has been defined by a progressive decline in function,” said Natalia. “What began as a childhood struggle has degenerated into a full-time medical burden. My condition has deteriorated to the point where I can no longer maintain my home independently and now require assistance with household chores.”

Today, Natalia dedicates two to three hours every day to symptom management. She attends at least three medical appointments each week and undergoes weekly plasma infusions treatments that she will require for the rest of her life.

The Invisible Weight of Chronic Illness

One of the most difficult aspects of Natalia’s journey is the unpredictability of her illness.

“The most significant misconception is the fluctuating nature of my chronic illness. Many fail to understand that CVID is dynamic; I experience severe shifts between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ days without any specific external trigger.”

Her diagnosis resulted in a profound shift in perspective. Because of her condition, she must always remain hypervigilant.

“My diagnosis has forced a fundamental shift in how I view my life: I have moved from ambition to preservation. I am now compelled to be realistic about my profound physical limitations, accepting that I can no longer function at a standard capacity.”

Building a Team That Listens

Amid the challenges, Natalia has found empowerment in assembling a medical team that believes in and validates her lived experience, even when the symptoms she discusses are rare or atypical.

Natalia also leans on therapy to navigate the mental burden of chronic illness and maintains regular communication with her team of specialists. A small circle of friends accommodates her disabilities and supports her as her health allows.

“When my health permits, I try to offer guidance to others who are newly diagnosed, but this is often limited to online communication from my home due to my physical restrictions.”

Finding Access Through Accessia Health

With help from the A.C.C.E.S.S. program’s legal team, Natalia obtained further support navigating complex SSDI documentation and ensured every requirement was submitted correctly. Finally, she received a hearing and was approved.

If it wasn’t for Accessia Health, Natalia says she would not have gotten the help she desperately needed.

“Without this program, I would have spent a fortune trying to find a lawyer capable of understanding my complicated medical history. Accessia Health removed the financial barrier and provided me with experts who understood my circumstances immediately, saving me time, money, and overwhelming stress.”
