A Life of Service: From Detective to CML Survivor | Bryce’s Story
During his 35 years in law enforcement, Bryce Gardner ran toward the hardest moments people face. Retirement was finally supposed to bring peace and the chance to enjoy quiet days with his wife, daughters, and grandchildren.
But that peace was interrupted in 2016 when Bryce got the news he never expected to hear. He was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), a rare blood cancer in certain blood-forming cells of the bone marrow (the soft, spongy tissue in the middle of certain bones). Overnight, the life he had built shifted in ways he could not have prepared for.
The Weight of a New Reality
The early days after his diagnosis were filled with hospital visits, unfamiliar medical language, and a fear he had never experienced before.
“I never thought it could be me,” said Bryce. “I experienced mental fatigue, anxiety, and the constant worry of not being able to pay for my life saving medication, death and leaving my family without a husband, father & grandfather.”
As he began treatment, side effects resulted in hospitalizations and the mental strain intensified.
CML requires ongoing treatment to keep the cancer controlled. Bryce took his prescribed chemo medication twice every day, knowing that missing even one refill could place him at serious risk. What started as a medical challenge soon became a financial one.
Like many patients navigating a new and complex diagnosis, Bryce found the healthcare system overwhelming. The fear of what was ahead made every decision feel heavy. Things only began to feel manageable after he connected with an oncologist who understood exactly what he needed.
With the right care team, Bryce began to settle into a routine. He learned how to manage his symptoms and has seen encouraging signs that his cancer under control.
The Financial Burden of Staying Alive
Now in his ninth year of this journey, the stress around cost never eased. Every refill brought new anxiety as Bryce waited for authorization letters, shipment updates, and confirmation that his medication would arrive on time. Things became even more challenging after he transitioned to Medicare.
“The switch to Medicare resulted in the loss lost my previous copay assistance program for my expensive chemo meds. As a result, I couldn’t afford my medication copay.”
During an appointment at the TMC Cancer Center in Arizona, his oncology team told him about Accessia Health and the support available for individuals living with CML. That referral changed the course of his journey.
Through Accessia Health’s CML Patient Program, Bryce found the lifeline he needed.
“Accessia Health has given me hope of extending my life by continuing to receive my specifically recommended medication, improving my mental health, and giving me and my family financial stability.”
A Renewed Perspective on Life
Bryce describes his journey as one filled with highs and lows. The emotional toll of cancer is still present, but he has learned to approach life with deeper gratitude and intention. His family remains at the center of his strength.
He also celebrates moments of progress, like recent test results showing major reductions in cancer cell activity.
Today, Bryce prioritizes the parts of life that make him feel grounded and hopeful, including exercise, eating healthy, and “loving harder” thanks to the support that Accessia Health has been able to provide.
